Mr. Costa lacks the depth to speak of “China invading Taiwan” and I hope Ukraine has the wisdom to avoid a defense technology sharing relationship with the Philippines. The U.S. is re-colonizing the Philippines as a piece of a future blockade of China. Ukraine doesn’t want China to perceive Ukraine as China’s enemy. They have a good history and it is discouraging to see so many uninformed people refer to China as Russia’s ally against Ukraine.
Norman Vincent Peale said “If you want a good dog, give it a good name.”
I would say, if Ukraine wants China as an enemy the way to accomplish that is to label China as Ukraine’s enemy.
In 2024 China’s DJI was THE major supplier of drones to China. You can see videos of Ukraine using Chinese DJI Mavic drones destroying Russian armor.
In the Pacific, China’s Naval buildup is forced by American threats to blockade China. China’s response has been overwhelming.
On Taiwan, I served in the ROC Navy (as an exchange student) and after the military I worked as a correspondent covering southern Taiwan. The majority of voters on Taiwan oppose the secession movement, so U.S. forces push for a war to colonize Taiwan without support of the military on Taiwan and without support of the people of Taiwan.
The sea drone technology developed by China is in response to U.S. nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers. The experience gained in Ukraine is useful, but realize, China has by far the greatest number of scientists and engineers…and the threat from U.S. imperialism has caused China’s people to demand national security for existing borders. The Republic of China on Taiwan has demanded that Taiwan is part of China and has been part of China since 1662.
(China took Taiwan from the Dutch two years before Britain took New York from the Dutch. Why is the ownership of Taiwan in question while no one questions the ownership of New York? Racism?)
Perhaps it would be useful to distinguish between the Chinese government, businesses, and the broader public. The information regarding the satellites was announced by Zelensky himself, and I don’t believe he or his office would intentionally spread disinformation that could alienate China. Ukraine has asked China to intervene multiple times, but nothing is happening. On the governmental level the cooperation with Russia is increasing. On the business level, there are opportunities for cooperation with Ukraine, but let’s see for how long.
There are China-haters in the U.S. government. One way to identify them is they refuse to use the title “President” for President Xi. They call him “Chairman”. This is a form of not recognizing the government of China.
These extremists claim that everything is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, so Texas State Senator Lois Kolkhorst passes laws to forbid Chinese ownership of land. All Chinese companies are treated as agents of China’s Communist Party.
It is a form of racism.
I watched it become extreme in 1997 after Hong Kong was returned to China. Suddenly overnight all Hong Kong companies were labeled as “agents of the Chinese Communist Party”.
The old Hong Kong port management company, Hutchinson Whampoa was suddenly labeled as an agent for China’s Communist Party. Hutchinson contracts with other British colonies like the Bahamas and contracts in Panama made extremists in the U.S. claim that “China’s Communist Party has taken over the Panama Canal”.
NewsMax reported that China’s military had 500 paratroopers in Panama as part of the takeover. NewsMax also wrote of Chinese expansion by taking over the Bahamas.
If Zelensky says something about China which isn’t true, I strongly suspect the false information is being spread by the U.S.
The U.S. government has spent hundreds of millions into programs to weaken China’s government and to force regime change. It is a dangerous game they play.
The accurate comparison between Taiwan and Ukraine is…
Just as Russia seeks to take Ukraine by force the U.S. seeks to take Taiwan. For over 25 years the U.S. government has funded a minority on Taiwan who want to secede from the mainland.
China’s overwhelming foreign policy goal is to defend against those who seek to break China into colony-sized pieces, to start another Century of Humiliation for China. The U.S. is funding separatist movements in Taiwan, in Xinjiang and in Hong Kong.
To understand the interplay between Russia, the U.S., NATO and Ukraine, it is important to recognize how important to both China and Ukraine that they defend their national boundaries against powers like the U.S. and Russia who fail to respect national sovereignty.
I'll address your comment on China. Ukraine has never perceived China as an enemy, and the role of Chinese components, as well as Chinese drones used by Ukraine in this war, is well known and well reported.
However, it’s difficult to ignore the facts.
I’ve been regularly reporting here on how Russia’s cooperation with China continues to deepen and how dependent its drone production has become on Chinese supplies. Take a small example: fiber-optic drones. Russia was the first to use them in this war and was entirely dependent on Chinese fiber-optic cables.
Russia also uses Chinese satellites to target Ukraine, along with other forms of technological and industrial support. China could stop this very quickly — but it does not. And Ukraine continues to raise this issue repeatedly.
So, yes, China is not an enemy. But it's really hard not to view it as Russia's ally.
I consistently see China labeled as Russia’s ally. This week the Secretary General of NATO labeled Russia as China’s “junior partner”. China’s sovereignty is under threat from the U.S. and as a result they created the world’s largest Navy and the Belt and Road initiative. I understand this year China will stop supplying China with components and with drones. I consider this a diplomatic failure by Ukraine.
I don’t believe China is supplying Russia with targeting information. Do you have an objective source?
IF China wanted to help Russia win the war, I promise you would see Russia’s military well armed and using more effective drone technology.
I apologize for being angry about the attacks upon China from Ukraine supporters. I am both a China supporter and a Ukraine supporter. I regret nobody bothered to use China’s manufacturing prowess to keep Ukraine flush with arms to rounds. I understand Ukraine bought about $1.7 billion in drones and drone parts from China in 2024. Now China claims to want to withdraw from supplying both sides with military drones.
I see the Ukraine-China relationship ignored and in disrepair. Chinese companies had huge financial losses when Russia invaded, and because of threats to China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, China’s people oppose foreign nations from invading sovereign territory. Ukraine should have maintained closer relations with China. I think they made a strategic mistake.
How to fix things? Ask Poland to order whatever Ukraine needs. Have the Chinese seller ship to Poland. If they buy artillery shells, buy forged billets to final machine in Poland. I believe trade restrictions against Ukraine are flimsy enough to evade. China’s people don’t consider Ukraine their enemy, but they see what Ukrainian people say about them.
Great article Olena. Saving the section on Russian drones for future reference.

Studies show that most countries are behind in the tech and jurisprudence they should make use of for counter UAS mitigation.
